Invest in Gold
Learn how to do it the best way!
For most investors, there are two main routes to investing in gold:
Gold Coins
- Choose between Sovereign and Britannia coins and then decide whether to invest in numismatic (rare or old coins) or newly minted bullion.
- As they are legal tender, coins are totally tax free for UK residents – there is no VAT, income tax or CGT to pay.
- Supply is extremely limited– only 75,000 Sovereigns are minted each year. This year’s supply was pre-sold by March.
- The value of the coins is not restricted to just the intrinsic value of the gold – their premium is rising with demand due to the scarcity value. This gives the potential to further enhance profits.
Gold Bars
- Legislation decreed that alternative assets were permitted into SIPPs from April 2007. ‘Good delivery bars’ qualify (these are exceptionally high purity), and are the only physical commodity permitted.
- This type of investment is VAT exempt, and can attract tax relief of up to 40%.
- A SIPP wrapper gives an investor the flexibility to house mix of paper and physical assets in the same vehicle.
- Gold is held in a segregated storage account at a depository, which is licensed by Nymex, Comex and CBOT and insured by Lloyd’s of London.
- Gold provides pension value protection for those nearing retirement, and a great hedge for younger, aggressive portfolios.
